By the 21st century, expanded missions and evolving global situations brought the Coast Guard even more attention in the United States. Missions to protect homeland security were easily included as part of port security, law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and search-and-rescue missions—things with which the Coast Guard has always been comfortable.

It was not a huge surprise when, in 2003, the Coast Guard was moved into the newly created Department of Homeland Security. This agency was established by President George W. Bush to address future threats to the United States. Because the Coast Guard is used to having many duties, it emerged as a strong core for the agency because the service could respond so well and so rapidly to many new challenges.
